  • Nigella sativa is an aromatic, annual herb (lives for one year). It belongs to the family Ranunculaceae and is commonly known as Black Cumin, Fennel flower, Nutmeg flower, Roman Coriander and Hab El Baraka (Arabic).     Black Cumin is reported in the Bible in the Book of Isaiah the prophet (28: 25-27) in the reaping of wheat, and Nigella black seed to flavour food. Black Cumin seed contains both fixed and essential oils. ‘Thymoquinone’ is the major component of the essential oils extracted from the seeds and comprises 28-57% of the total seeds essential oil. Other components in the oil include ‘Melanthin’, and ‘Nigelline’ are also found in the oil extract. In addition, a rich variety of Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, Niacin and Folacin are also found in the seed oil.

    More importantly, medicinally ‘Thymoquinone’ manifested anti-neoplastic properties in cultured human cells and is used in the treatment of several types of cancer, including pancreatic ‘ductal-adenocarcinoma’. In addition to promoting cell death of cancer cells, ‘Thymoquinone’ has protective anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Green seeds wrapped in bundles and rubbed until warm is known to emit an aroma which opens clogged sinuses, the way eucalypt does. Commercially, Nestle’ uses Black Cumin as a food allergy treatment. Apparently, ‘Thymoquinone’ compound extracted from the seed, interacts with the opioid receptors in the body and helps reduce allergic reactions to food.
